‘The military were very surprised when I joined the revolution’ — Myanmar’s NUG Health and Education Minister Zaw Wai Soe

The renowned orthopaedic surgeon turned minister speaks about his path from doctor to the generals to revolutionary politician, and Myanmar's healthcare workers three years on from the coup

An internationally trained specialist, Zaw Wai Soe was a trusted physician to the highest echelons of Myanmar society before the 2021 military coup. Prior to becoming a minister in the National Unity Government (NUG), his patients included Aung San Suu Kyi and the family of former dictator Than Shwe.

In 2005, Zaw Wai Soe was on duty when victims of three simultaneous bomb blasts inundated Yangon General Hospital with hundreds more emergency patients than it could handle.

This led him to champion the establishment of Myanmar’s first emergency medicine system, which was supported by the military regime then in power in its bid to meet the requirements of hosting the 2013 Southeast Asian Games. Zaw Wai Soe is also a pioneer of spinal surgery in. . .
