Two Myanmar military officers killed in Yangon helicopter crash

One of the victims was an air force commander linked to airstrikes targeting anti-regime forces in southern Myanmar

A helicopter carrying two high-ranking military officials crashed in Yangon Region’s Hmawbi Township on Friday afternoon, killing both, according to sources.

The deceased were identified as Maj-Gen Soe Tin Latt, the head of the Southern Region Air Force Command, and his co-pilot Col Myo Thaung.

Two other crew members—a female pilot and a senior engineer—were injured but survived the incident, a police source in Hmawbi told Myanmar Now.

Initial reports suggested that the Eurocopter helicopter was conducting a training flight at Hmawbi Air Base, located about 20 miles north of Yangon International Airport, when the crash occurred.

However, pro-junta social media accounts later claimed that the officers were en route to a flood-hit area when the helicopter went down.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, sources said.
