Resistance destroys police station during advance towards vital power plant in Magway Region

Pursuing long-term plans to incapacitate strategic munitions factories in Magway Region, anti-junta fighters seized and torched a village police station in Salin Township, Magway Region on Wednesday after a three-hour battle, resistance and local sources said. Sources in Salin Township told Myanmar Now that resistance forces captured the junta-run police station in Ta Nyaung village, near the west bank of the Ayeyarwady River around 18 miles north of the junta-controlled town of Salin and eight miles southwest of Seikphyu, Magway Region. “The battle lasted nearly three hours. Villagers were trapped during the fighting,” a man from Salin Township said. “Fortunately, there were no reports of civilian casualties during the clashes because the police station is located to the south, away from the centre of the village,” he added. Although the fighting on the ground did not cause any known casualties, an 11-year-old boy was injured by a junta airstrike on Ta Nyaung and nearby villages, according to a local administrator working for the publicly mandated National Unity Government (NUG). The NUG, a cabinet formed and endorsed by elected members of parliament overthrown in the military coup of 2021, oversees local administrative and armed defence organisations in resistance-controlled areas across Myanmar. “ An 11-year-old boy from Ta Nyaung Village was seriously wounded in the abdomen,” the Salin Township-based NUG administrator said. “But luckily, his condition is stable now.” In the attack, a junta warplane dropped at least three bombs on Ta Nyaung and nearby villages, according to local sources. In a public statement, the Salin Township People’s Defence Team (PDT) said they had carried out an ambush on the Ta Nyaung police station at around 5am on Wednesday. The station is located on the main road linking Salin with Seikphyu. The police station is also less than two miles southwest of a power plant in the village of Myo Hla that supplies electricity to the township’s junta armaments factories. At least eight junta police were killed in the attack, during which resistance forces also took two prisoners, according to the Salin Township PDT. “The police station is not a large one. One or two officers managed to flee during the clashes,” a source close to the resistance forces said. “Some family members of the junta police, including a pregnant woman and children, were also taken into custody,” the source added. The resistance fighters torched and destroyed the police station before junta reinforcements arrived in the area from a nearby base in Seikphyu, sources said. The junta reinforcement column joined forces with the junta troops from the power station in Myo Hla Village and retook control of the police station on the same day. Following the attack, the junta has reportedly tightened security in Salin, deploying five vehicles to patrol the town and its surroundings. Junta forces have also recently been raiding villages west of the road from Salin to Sin Phyu Kyun, a small town about six miles north of Salin, according to local sources. The same sources said the area east of the road remains under the military regime’s control.
