Junta raids near Shwebo leave one resistance fighter dead, several civilians injured

Regime forces raided two villages near the town of Shwebo in Sagaing Region late last week, killing at least one resistance fighter and injuring several civilians, according to local sources. The first attack came late Friday, when a column of around 100 junta troops entered Shar Taw, a village located about three miles south of Shwebo, after first attacking a nearby People’s Defence Force (PDF) outpost, a resident of the village told Myanmar Now. “They crossed the Mu River at about 11pm and attacked the outpost, killing one PDF fighter and injuring another,” the resident said. Early the next morning, the column continued south as junta forces from Logistics Battalion 2, stationed northeast of Shwebo, provided cover by firing at least 10 rounds of heavy artillery, according to an official of the local People’s Defence Team. The shells landed in Yin Mar, a village about four miles south of Shwebo, and in Pa Goe Kone, another village east of the town, the official said. “One shell struck Pa Goe Kone but failed to explode, embedding itself in a building. Most of the casualties were in Yin Mar,” he added, without providing further details. At around 10:30, the regime also dropped at least 30 bombs on Yin Mar from a Y12 logistics aircraft, according to resistance sources. However, no casualties were reported from that assault. On Saturday evening, before returning to Shwebo, the junta troops reportedly released a number of civilians who had been taken captive in Shar Taw. Regime and resistance forces have clashed repeatedly near Shwebo since the beginning of the month. On October 2, anti-junta fighters ambushed Myanmar army troops advancing toward Ta Ga Nan, a village located just over a mile south of Shwebo, killing seven soldiers, including Sergeant San Htwe, and taking another sergeant and three others prisoner. The resistance forces said that mortars and other weapons and ammunition, as well as a pair of signal jammers, were also seized in the attack. The clash also left two resistance members dead, while a shell that landed on a nearby monastery killed three 14-year-old novice monks instantly and injured eight others, including another novice who later died while undergoing treatment. Three days after that incident, resistance forces raided a junta outpost in Zee Kone Lay, a village on the Shwebo–Ye-U road, killing two soldiers and wounding two. One resistance member was also killed. The remaining troops at the outpost fled, and resistance forces reportedly seized a G3 rifle, a carbine, a shotgun, and some ammunition.
