In Photos: The aftermath of the military raid on Kar Paung Kya

Junta troops stormed the village of Kar Paung Kya in Sagaing Region’s Taze Township on August 26, causing locals to flee into the nearby forests for safety.

One of the villagers was shot dead on the day of the raid. The next day, the same soldiers also shot and killed 30-year-old Moe Swe Oo, a Kar Paung Kya villager in hiding, and wounded his sister.

Villagers found six bodies in Kar Paung Kya after sneaking back in to the village on August 29, while it was still occupied by the junta’s troops. Locals say fear of the 100 Myanmar army soldiers still stationed there has stopped them from burying the men.

On Tuesday, some villagers again briefly returned to witness the state of their homes, only to find them ransacked, their belongings destroyed and valuables including jewelry stolen. Some houses were burned down.

Locals also found evidence of exploded artillery shells and other weapons near the village.

The residents who went to Kar Paung Kya on Tuesday were accompanied by a citizen journalist who supplied the following photos to Myanmar Now documenting the destruction.
