Myanmar’s military inflicted heavy civilian casualties with an airstrike on a major market in northern Shan State on Thursday, according to the ethnic Kokang armed group that controls the town where the incident occurred.
A representative of the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) told Myanmar Now on Friday that at least five people were killed and another seven injured in the attack on the Myoma market in Hsenwi, a town about 35 miles northeast of Lashio, the region’s largest city.
The town has been under MNDAA control since early January after it was captured as part of the Operation 1027 anti-regime offensive launched late last year.
According to residents, the number of casualties is expected to rise as more bodies—many of them blown to pieces—are recovered from the wreckage.
