A former electoral candidate from the National League for Democracy (NLD) party was arrested this week in southern Rakhine State’s Kyaukphyu town, which has been blockaded by the junta.
Zaw Win Myint, 63, had run for state parliament in the 2015 general election and the 2017 by-elections, aiming to represent Ann Township. He was taken from his home in Myit Nar Tan ward by police officers at around 6pm on Tuesday and is being held at the central police station, according to area residents.
The reason for his arrest was not known at the time of reporting.
Zaw Win Myint wrote Facebook posts opposing the junta immediately following the 2021 coup which ousted the elected NLD administration, but had been living a quiet life with his family in recent years, sources close to him said.
