Child killed, three people injured in blast at junta roadside checkpoint in Mandalay Region

Resistance sources speculate that a Myanmar army soldier at the site accidentally triggered a makeshift bomb seized from guerrilla forces by the military

A child was killed and three more people—including a second child—were injured in an explosion that happened while junta forces were searching vehicles along the road connecting Mandalay to Mogok in Singu Township on Monday.

The blast occurred near Shwe Pyi village, in an area dominated by the military-backed Pyu Saw Htee militia, which dominates that community and at least five others nearby.

The surviving child reportedly required an amputation of his arm due to the extent of his wounds, according to the information officer of the anti-junta Singu Township People’s Defence Team.

He noted that the ages and identities of the victims were not known at the time of reporting.

“I heard that the explosion happened after a junta soldier used a communication device,” the resistance force spokesperson said. He speculated that the incident was caused by a makeshift explosive device that the troops had confiscated from guerrilla groups and that it had been triggered by radio waves.

“It appears that they are reusing weapons they seized from revolutionary forces, which is one of their tactics,” the information officer explained.

He dismissed the suggestion that a resistance group had detonated a bomb at the site.

“It would be very difficult for us to access such places, let alone set up explosive devices there.”
