Trump ally Roger Stone to get $50,000 a month to lobby for Myanmar regime

Roger Stone, a prominent ally of US President Donald Trump, has registered to lobby on behalf of Myanmar’s military in an effort to restore ties with the United States, according to a recent filing. The veteran political operative disclosed in an April 29 filing under the Foreign Agents Registration Act that he was hired to provide lobbying services for Myanmar’s Ministry of Information. The filing states that Stone will work on “rebuilding relations between the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and the United States,” with a focus on trade, natural resources, and humanitarian relief. Stone will be working as a “consultant” for the DCI Group, a lobbying firm with ties to the Republican Party, hired by the regime last year as part of a broader effort to end US sanctions. According to the filing, Stone will be paid $50,000 a month for his services. As a long-time Trump confidante, Stone played an informal advisory role during his 2016 presidential campaign and remained a vocal supporter throughout Trump’s presidency. In 2019, he was convicted on charges including lying to Congress and witness tampering during an investigation into Russian election interference. Trump granted him a pardon in 2020. Stone’s role comes as Myanmar’s military leadership seeks to reshape its international standing five years after seizing power in a coup. Since holding elections that began at the end of last year, it has recast itself as a civilian administration, despite widespread rejection of its claims to legitimacy. The United States has imposed a range of sanctions on Myanmar’s military leadership since the coup, citing rampant human rights abuses and the dismantling of democratic institutions.
