Resistance forces seize junta base in Kani Township, Sagaing Region

The joint forces of armed resistance groups on Thursday (November 23) seized the junta’s Tower Taing hill base near Larpoet Village, Kani Township, Sagaing Region, after a two-day attack, the Military Region 1 of the shadow National Unity Government (NUG) announced on November 25.

The Military Region 1 announced that resistance groups started the attack on the base near Larpoet Village on Monywa-Yargyi-Kalewa Road on the morning of November 22. About 30 junta troops were stationed in the base. 

According to a resistance fighter, the junta army was positioned on a hill and they had to fight for two days in order to capture the base which was fully armed.

“Despite their limited manpower, they were well-equipped. Fully armed, they were stationed on the hill. They had two MG3 guns,” said a resistance fighter. 

In that battle, a junta soldier was killed, 11 others were injured. Resistance groups could seize a gun and ammunition, according to NUG’s Military Region 1. .

According to local resistance groups, the junta launched airstrikes three times on the day the resistance groups started attacking the base. 

On November 22, when the fighting started, two resistance fighters were killed in the battle, and another resistance fighter was killed in the battle the following morning.

Kani Town, situated on the west bank of the Chindwin River, lies a mere 40 miles from Monywa Town, where the Northwestern Military Regional Command is headquartered on the opposite side of the river. The journey by car takes just under two hours.

In Kani Township, where the revolutionary groups have strong territorial control, the junta troops are stationed at the police station, the general administration office, and Shwezigon Hill in Kani Town. Outside the town, junta troops stationed at the Tower Taing hill base on Monywa-Yargyi-Kalewa Road and Yaelelkyun Village, according to local resistance groups.

On April 17 of this year, resistance groups attacked and captured the junta’s Tower Taing hill base near milepost 49 of the Monywa-Yargyi-Kalewa Road and seized weapons and ammunition from junta troops. After the capture of the base in April, the resistance groups retreated, and the junta army was re-deployed there days later.
