Ongoing airstrikes in Singu Township kill 35, including women and children

Three people were killed Monday evening when Myanmar junta forces launched airstrikes on a village in Singu Township, Mandalay Region, an area under National Unity Government (NUG) control, according to local sources. Airstrikes on Singu have been ongoing since mid-March, with resistance sources saying the bombings on Let Pan Hla have brought the death toll to 35.According to a male resident, who requested anonymity, the junta air strike began at approximately 6pm, resulting in many casualties, all of whom were women.“A resistance checkpoint is located nearby the village,” he said. “The airstrike was aimed at that, but the bomb overshot and exploded here instead. The victims were women, in their 30s to 40s.”Five individuals are reported to have been injured, but the full details of the casualties and injuries are not yet available at this time. On Wednesday, the Mandalay People's Defence Forces (MDY-PDF) also confirmed that at least 34 civilians were killed in the airstrikes throughout the month. On March 4, a local police station was also targeted in the village. The explosion devastated the station where junta prisoners of war and others were residing. At the same time, a woman shopping at a nearby betel nut shop was killed in the blast, and several others were injured.On March 14, the junta air force then conducted an airstrike on Let Pan Hla village in the afternoon, hitting a busy market. The strike killed 31 people, including children, and left more than 30 others wounded. According to local witnesses, the aircraft hovered over the village before dropping bombs on the bustling market. The victims included an infant and a 5-year-old child."The village is nearly deserted now, as many people have fled,” a Singu resident told Myanmar now. “It has become eerily silent.”The regime has consistently targeted civilians in Singu Township with aerial assaults, an area with no active conflict.Junta airstrikes hit the same village on February 18 at about 10:40 p.m., striking a home near a middle school in Pyi Soe Aung ward. The blast killed San San Mon, a displaced woman, and injured her 2-year-old daughter and 53-year-old Khin Maung Myint, both of whom suffered head wounds.Singu Town, located along the Mandalay-Mogok Road, relies on agriculture and gold mining as its main sources of livelihood. Let Pan Hla village is a large community that consists of farmers and other civilians who live on this key route. The junta has not commented on why it has focused on the village.Singu is situated around 54 miles from the city of Mandalay, the economic heart of central Myanmar. The resistance made significant territorial gains near the city, taking Singu Town in July of last year. In response, the junta rolled out efforts to reclaim the town through heavy naval attacks.Junta airstrikes have targeted Kan Taung, Nwe Yon, and Let Pan Hla villages on August early last year, killing at least 15 people, including children. To the south of Singu lies the town of Madaya, where fighting has also become increasingly tense.Clashes in Singu Township have spiked since June 27, 2024, with airstrikes and artillery fire destroying nearly the entire town. The NUG’s Ministry of Human Rights reports that from early 2023 to March 16, 2025, the junta conducted 2,190 airstrikes, killing 372 children.
