People’s Defence Force (PDF) fighters said they killed four and seriously injured a lieutenant colonel on Wednesday evening in an attack against a group of junta personnel at a bar near a military base in Naypyitaw Township.
Four fighters from the Naypyitaw PDF’s Battalions 801 and 802 launched the attack using two M16 guns, said Ngwe Soe, commander of the PDF’s Naypyitaw Regional Command under the National Unity Government (NUG).
A local administrator, a police officer, and two soldiers were killed in the 8:30pm attack at the Shwe Nan Taw bar, while the lieutenant colonel was among three who were injured. “We managed to fire over 20 shots,” Ngwe Soe said.
He added: “Junta-appointed administrators, the lieutenant colonel and his guards were meeting at the bar in plain clothes. We had previously received intel that he would be treating them to a meal there.”
He said he did not know the lieutenant colonel’s name.
The bar is in Aung Mingalar village in Naypyitaw’s Lewe Township and is close to a military base. “There is a security checkpoint on the route west to the entrance we used,” Ngwe Soe said. “Both soldiers and police officers were present. If we go further than that, we get to the junta battalions. They’re all along that road.”
No PDF members were injured or captured in the attack, he said. “The security in Naypyitaw is very tight as it’s the military council’s last line of defence. But we take serious precautions during our operations.”
The day after the Naypyitaw shooting, PDF members in Bago Region killed the police chief of Kawa Township in an early morning attack.
Win Naing was riding a motorcycle near the Min Kyeik tea shop at around 5am on Thursday when PDF gunmen approached.
“We chased him from behind and shot him at close range,” said a Bago PDF spokesperson.
The attackers shot the police chief in the head five times, he added. Junta forces tightened security in the township after the killing and carried out searches.
“The police chief was one of the major contributors towards the arrests of revolutionary forces and people taking part in the Civil Disobedience Movement in the township,” said the PDF spokesperson.
The Kawa PDF helped carry out the attack and no resistance fighters were injured or detained, he added.
