Myanmar’s military kills three, injures seven, in Magway’s Salin Township

Junta troops killed at least three people and injured seven others during raids on several villages in Magway Region’s Salin Township over the weekend, local sources said. Two of the dead were killed by an artillery shell that exploded in Pan Taw Gyi, a village about six miles northeast of the town of Salin. Seven others, including four young girls, were injured. “A man died on Saturday, while a woman passed away at a hospital in Magway on Sunday,” a representative of the local National Unity Government (NUG) administration told Myanmar Now. The artillery strike was carried out by regime forces advancing from Nwe Ta Mei, a village located near the town of Sin Phyu Kyun, about two miles northeast of Pan Taw Gyi. The town is under the control of the military junta. “A woman who was injured in the attack doesn’t know about her husband’s death yet. A four-year-old girl, also injured, lost her mother,” said a woman who assisted the victims. The more severely injured victims were transported to hospitals in the towns of Salin and Magway, both under junta control, due to the lack of healthcare workers in NUG-administered areas of Salin Township, locals said. “We don’t have doctors in our area to treat serious injuries. We only have nurses, and they are not able to handle cases that require surgery,” a woman living in the area said. A column of junta troops has been firing artillery to advance into villages south of Sin Phyu Kyun since Saturday, local sources said. The regime also conducted airstrikes at around 11:50am on Sunday after clashes broke out near Myaung Khwa, a village less than a mile north of Pan Taw Gyi. “Two fighter jets dropped bombs on Pan Taw Gyi, Nyaung Kone, and Myaung Khwa during Sunday’s clashes but there were no reported civilian casualties,” said the NUG administrator. However, on Monday, the body of a 70-year-old man was found in Nyaung Kone after junta troops retreated from the village, situated roughly two miles northeast of Pan Taw Gyi. More than 8,000 people from 13 villages have been displaced in Salin Township since Saturday, according to the local NUG administrative team. On Tuesday, at least 4,000 people were again forced to flee their houses after a junta convoy arrived in Auk Hlaing Village Tract from the junta-controlled town of Salin. Since early April, a military column has been moving through villages near Salin and Sin Phyu Kyun following resistance attacks on junta power stations in Salin Township on March 31. At least seven civilians, including a monk, were killed in Salin Township by aerial assaults and other attacks conducted by the junta troops last month.
