Personnel in Yangon’s notorious Insein Prison have inflicted daily physical abuse and torture on a Myanmar Now journalist and two other political prisoners after they exposed human rights violations, according to a source connected to the prison.
Sources inside the prison said that Myanmar Now photojournalist Sai Zaw Thaike, labour rights advocate Thet Hnin Aung, and Naing Win, all of whom are serving long-term sentences in Insein Prison, have been beaten and tortured day and night by prison authorities since January.
The abuse is believed to be a retaliatory response to their informing the junta-appointed National Human Rights Commission that prison staff were violating their fellow inmates’ human rights during a visit by the commission’s representatives last month.
According to the commission’s recent statements, its members visited Insein Prison in October 2024 as well as in January of this year.
