Myanmar military’s shelling kills four civilians north of Mandalay

Two of the victims killed by heavy artillery in Madaya Township were internally displaced people, forced to flee their homes by intensifying clashes in a nearby township

Four people have been killed in areas under heavy artillery fire in Madaya Township, Mandalay Region as resistance forces captured seven military outposts in late July, locals said.  

The deaths occurred during two separate bouts of shelling on July 24 and 30 in Tha Pyay Pin Kone village just over a mile east of Madaya’s urban centre and some 20 miles north of Mandalay on the Mandalay-Myitkyina road.

Than Win, a villager living in Tha Pyay Pin Kone, was gathering vegetables from a garden when she was killed instantly by an exploding shell at around 7am on July 30, a woman from Madaya said. 

"The shell landed near her while she was picking ridged gourd close to her home. The explosion was so close it beheaded her; it was very bad luck,” the woman said the next day. “She has already been buried. Now, everyone. . .
