Myanmar military kills 7 in airstrike on Sagaing car workshop

Myanmar’s military bombed a vehicle workshop in Sagaing Region’s Ye-U Township on Monday, killing seven civilians, according to local resistance forces. On Monday afternoon, three gyrocopters and an Mi-35 helicopter from the regime’s Monywa-based Northwestern Regional Military Command bombed and then fired on the car workshop in Tinteinyan, a village about 10 miles west of the town of Ye-U, for about half an hour. Resistance groups said that a customer and five men and a woman working at the shop were killed in the attack. At least five others from the surrounding area were injured. The junta aircraft dropped at least 10 bombs on the area before opening fire with machine guns, a spokesperson for the Ye-U Township People’s Defense Organisation told Myanmar Now. “The car workshop was not run by the resistance side. No battles had occurred at all and so the airstrike was completely unprovoked, likely due to an informer tip-off,” said the spokesperson, Htoo Khant Zaw. At least 10 civilian vehicles at the workshop were also destroyed. Photographs sent by local resistance groups to Myanmar Now show many of the victims’ bodies were mutilated beyond recognition. Myanmar Now repeatedly tried to contact the junta-appointed Sagaing Region spokesperson, Aung Zaw Oo, but was unable to reach him. In Ye-U Township, home to 191 villages, the junta has maintained a foothold only in Ye-U town. Rural areas are controlled by resistance groups, and the regime has frequently carried out airstrikes targeting civilians across these areas. Previously, the junta conducted airstrikes on Tinteinyan in August and October 2024, killing four civilians, including children. In 2022, the regime also carried out an extensive arson attack on the village, burning over 300 of the village’s 1,000 houses to the ground and reducing over 200 market stalls to ashes. According to data released by the National Unity Government on September 3, out of the 139 civilian deaths and over 260 injuries from junta airstrikes during August, more than a third occurred in Sagaing Region.
