Myanmar junta attacks another school, killing two in Chin State’s Mindat Township

A woman and a boy were killed in an airstrike on a school in Chin State’s Mindat Township on Thursday, days after a similar attack left dozens dead in Sagaing Region earlier this week. A displaced man living in Mindat Township told Myanmar Now that the number of casualties was relatively low because the school, located in a village about 20 miles north of the township’s administrative centre, was not operating at the time of the assault. “Luckily, the school has been closed since Chin resistance forces launched their offensive to seize the town,” the man said, referring to the intensification of fighting that led to the capture of the town of Mindat by anti-regime groups late last year. The man identified the victims as “a mother in her 30s and a sixth-grade boy,” was unable to provide any further details. On Monday, a junta airstrike on a school in Sagaing’s Depayin Township killed 22 students and two teachers. More than 100 others were also injured, some critically, in the worst such attack in two years. At least 11 people were injured in Thursday’s attack in Mindat Township, which also destroyed at least 40 houses, according to a member of the township’s People’s Administrative Team. Video footage posted on Facebook shows several houses burning following the airstrikes. It was unclear at the time of reporting if there were any casualties from that attack. “The military has conducted aerial assaults over urban areas of Mindat before, but this is the first time they’ve bombed the rural parts of the township,” said the displaced Mindat resident. In April, junta airstrikes targeting the town of Mindat also hit a village about nine miles to the west, killing six civilians, including a pastor, a disabled man, and two children. The regime has also intensified its attacks in Rakhine State over the past week, conducting airstrikes in the north of the state that have killed at least 22 people since Monday. A series of strikes on the town of Kyauktaw that began on Wednesday killed at least 10 people over a two-day period, according to the Arakan Army (AA), which captured the town in February 2024. Following attacks on the town’s Ywarma Ward that left three women dead and five others wounded on Wednesday, the junta resumed bombing on Thursday, killing at least seven more residents of the same area, the group said. On Tuesday, another airstrike on the village of Htun Ya Wai in northern Rakhine’s Rathedaung Township killed 12 people, including a two-year-old girl. That attack was denounced by AA spokesperson Khaing Thukha as “a major war crime.”
