Mother and daughter killed by Myanmar junta airstrike in northern Mandalay Region

A junta airstrike killed a young woman and her six-year-old daughter in Mandalay Region’s resistance-held Thabeikkyin Township over the weekend, according to local sources. The incident occurred at around 8am on Saturday, five hours after clashes broke out as junta troops advanced on Twin Nge, a village located about 25 miles north of the town of Thabeikkyin. The 30-year-old woman and her child had briefly returned to their home in the nearby village of Yae Nyar U when they were hit and fatally wounded, a local woman told Myanmar Now. “The woman’s leg was completely severed at the thigh. There were blood stains on the floor where she had dragged herself to her daughter, who lay motionless after being hit in the head,” the woman said. “The mother died while searching for a clinic, and the child passed away later in a car from her head injury,” she added. According to reports, four residents of Kyauk Phyu, another village in the area, were also injured by the airstrikes. Yae Nyar U is situated just east of Twin Nge on the road to the town of Mongmit (Momeik) in northern Shan State. The village has been largely deserted since its school and monastery were destroyed by artillery fire from a nearby junta outpost. “Most people no longer dare to stay in the village. They’ve all fled the fighting and are hiding in the forest. But some return briefly during the day to gather fruit and feed their animals,” a resident said, explaining why the woman and her child were in the village. Resistance forces have controlled most of Thabeikkyin Township since capturing its administrative centre in August. However, the regime still holds a number of positions in the northern part of the township, including the one in Yae Nyar U. “Our coalition of resistance forces has maintained a blockade of the area for three months. During this time, there have been instances of the junta airdropping rations, weapons, and reinforcements,” stated the information officer for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), one of the armed groups active in the area. According to a statement issued by the PLA on November 12, the group has maintained control over Twin Nge since it launched attacks on the village on August 17. Other groups involved in the fighting in Thabeikkyin Township include the Mandalay People’s Defence Force (MDY-PDF) and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), which has controlled Mongmit, about 46 miles east of Twin Nge, since June. The TNLA has also occupied the ruby-mining town of Mogok, southwest of Mongmit, while Singu Township, south of Thabeikkyin, is under MDY-PDF control.
