Four killed by Myanmar junta attacks in Mandalay Region’s Natogyi Township

Regime forces killed four civilians, including a five-year-old child, in Mandalay Region’s Natogyi Township over the weekend, according to local sources. On Sunday, junta shelling claimed the lives of three women in Ywar Gyi, a village located about 10 miles west of the town of Natogyi, resistance sources told Myanmar Now. “A shell struck a home in Ywar Gyi, blowing the homeowner’s skull open. Two other women inside the house were also killed instantly,” said the information officer for the township’s People’s Defence Team. The victims were identified as Win Hla, a woman in her 60s, and Zar Ni Htun and Mi Su San, both in their late 20s. Another woman and a child were also critically injured, the information officer added. Ywar Gyi is a large village located along the Natogyi-Myingyan road. The shells were reportedly fired by junta troops stationed in the town of Myingyan, some 10 miles to the west. A day earlier, an airstrike on Than Pin Hla, another village in western Natogyi Township, killed a five-year-old child and injured four others, according to a local man. There wasn’t even any fighting in the area,” he said, noting that heavy artillery was also used in the attack. The attack was part of an advance by junta troops that has forced many villagers to flee their homes, he added.Natogyi Township, located southwest of Mandalay, is regarded as a resistance stronghold. The junta routinely targets villages in the township with artillery attacks and airstrikes, often resulting in heavy civilian casualties. On July 31, the junta declared martial law in 63 townships, including three in Mandalay Region, and has since stepped up its airstrikes in many area. On Saturday, bombing raids targeting areas of Mandalay Region controlled by anti-junta forces killed 19 people and injured 31 in Mogok and Thabeikkyin townships, both north of Mandalay.
