Rescue workers say they are continuing their search for seven people who remain missing after a ferry capsized on the Yangon River early Wednesday morning, leaving at least one person dead.

The ferry was carrying a driver and 16 passengers, including high-school students, when it collided with a larger boat as it crossed the river shortly after 8am, according to fire department officials.

“Of the 17 people who were on board, nine have been rescued,” the Myanmar Fire Service Department reported on its Facebook page, adding that teams from four townships took part in the rescue effort.

A man who has joined the search said the accident occurred in Kyimyindaing Township as the ferry was about halfway across the river. He added that one passenger was also found dead.

“Among the missing are three students who were on their way to school when the accident happened,” he said, speaking. . .
