Aftershock kills two in Mandalay

Limited aid, restrictions on rebuilding, and the fear of aftershocks are causing survivors ongoing hardship more than seven weeks after March’s devastating earthquake

A father and son were killed in Mandalay on Saturday when a 5.7-magnitude tremor caused a tree to fall on their temporary dwelling on a monastery compound, locals and emergency responders said.

The tremor, a likely aftershock from the devastating, 7.7-magnitude earthquake that hit central Myanmar on March 28 of this year, had a magnitude of 5.7 and was centred in Myittha, some 30 miles south of Mandalay.

The incident took place at the Abhyarama Shwegu Monastery in Sein Pan ward—part of Mandalay’s Maha Aungmyay Township—which has been sheltering large numbers of people displaced by the March quake.

Following a heavy rainstorm that occurred on the same day, a large lebbeck tree with a height of more than 40 feet was uprooted and fell on the refugees’ temporary shelter, killing the displaced people inside.
