Yangon PDF kills junta soldiers in weekend attacks

The Yangon People’s Defence Force (PDF) attacked two military targets with explosives over the weekend, killing several soldiers, the National Unity Government’s (NUG) Yangon Division Command said in a statement.

PDF fighters fired six shots from grenade launchers at an office of the military’s Tactical Operation Command in Hlaing Tharyar’s Anawrahta Industrial Zone at around 7pm on Saturday.

A spokesperson for Yangon Division Command said four of the six grenades hit their targets, destroying about 80% of the office.

The fighters then used four handmade bombs to attack a convoy of five military vehicles at the Thamagone traffic junction as they towards the site of the first attack, destroying two vehicles, killing two soldiers and injuring six, the spokesperson said.

A military tactical officer was travelling in the convoy, he added.

“We were attacked on our way back from the mission but all of our comrades managed to retreat successfully,” he added. It is unclear how many junta casualties there were from the first attack.

A man who lives nearby said he heard an explosion on Saturday evening from Police Battalion No. 9, where Tactical Operation Command is based, and later saw ambulances driving into the compound until midnight.

He also heard gunshots and explosions from the Thamagone junction shortly after the explosion, he said.

“We heard so much noise,” he said. “I’m guessing many soldiers got injured.”

The next day at around 7am, PDF fighters attacked a military post outside a local administrative office in Taik Gyi Township’s Oh Dan ward, killing one soldier and badly injuring another’s leg, Yangon Division Command said.

Last week on Tuesday, the PDF killed multiple junta soldiers stationed near the Aungzaya suspension bridge in Hlaing Tharyar in an attack using remote-controlled explosives, the NUG said.

The junta has not commented on the attacks.
