Two Myanmar political prisoners die while serving sentences 

One of the detainees, 38, died due to inadequate medical care in Magway Region’s Thayet Prison, according to an advocacy group, while the other, a 41-year-old former journalist, succumbed to stage 4 throat cancer in Yangon’s Insein Prison

Two political prisoners have died in junta-controlled prisons since Saturday, according to their family members and prisoners’ rights advocates. 

Nay Lin Htike, 41, was a former journalist who died of stage 4 throat cancer on Sunday in Yangon’s Insein Prison, his wife told Myanmar Now. Despite receiving treatment both inside and outside prison, his health deteriorated rapidly.

Recently, prison authorities informed the family in a letter that his cancer had reached its most advanced stage, the family member added.

“The letter mentioned that the cancer had spread to his throat and lungs,” his wife said. 

Nay Line Htike’s body was removed from the prison yesterday and taken to Yayway Cemetery, where a cremation is scheduled for August 1.

Nay Lin Htike had worked as a reporter for the Democratic Voice of Burma until 2021.
