Two children among five killed in junta airstrikes on Magway village

Airstrikes carried out by Myanmar’s military killed three women and two children and injured more than a dozen others in Magway Region’s Myaing Township on Monday, according to local sources. The attack, targeting the village of Kan Myint Kone, took place at around 9:30am and was followed by a barrage of heavy artillery, the sources said. Four of the deceased—the three women and a five-year-old boy—were killed instantly, while a 13-year-old girl died later of her injuries, a villager involved in the rescue effort told Myanmar Now. “Their bodies were almost entirely ripped apart by powerful bombs. Only the body of a woman in her 60s was recognisable,” he said, describing the condition of the first four victims. The girl who was later reported dead was among at least 14 people, including five children, who sustained serious injuries. Three were said to be in critical condition. According to the villager, four of the five injured children are under the age of five, including one who is just a year old. The attack came a day after local resistance forces carried out a drone assault on a junta convoy travelling west on the road from Pakokku to Myaing and Pauk townships. The 15-vehicle convoy, accompanied by a column of around 150 ground troops, was intercepted on Sunday between Pakokku and Kandaw, a village about 10 miles to the west, according to a resistance fighter who took part in the attack. “Their convoy was halted by our drone strikes. They suffered heavy casualties, so they conducted airstrikes on surrounding villages,” said the resistance fighter, who claimed that the attack damaged at least three vehicles and killed or injured 30 soldiers. According to local sources, the junta convoy was still in Kandaw as of late Wednesday. The village, which is about three miles south of Kan Myint Kone, is largely deserted due to the presence of a military unit that has been stationed there for the past five months. Most people living in the area have been displaced as a result of concerns about the advance of regime forces into the area, including from neighbouring Pakokku, according to the resistance fighter. On Monday, a junta airstrike on a wedding party in the village of Ma Taw in Sagaing Region’s Mingin Township killed at least 28 people, including six children, and injured another 54.
