Three members of Cobra Column resistance force killed in Myanmar army ambush

Three members of the Cobra Column resistance force, which operates under the Karen National Liberation Army’s (KNLA) 27th Battalion, were killed in a roadside attack by junta soldiers in Karen State’s Myawaddy Township on Tuesday evening.

The casualties were identified as logistics officer Naw Eh Moo, and Lu Lu Paw and Kyaw Gyi, whose positions in the group were not confirmed at the time of reporting.

They were among 12 Cobra Column troops who had been returning from buying food supplies in Kyauk Khat village, located along the Myawaddy-Waw Lay road, when Myanmar army soldiers opened fire on their vehicle using machine guns.

“It happened in an area where Cobra Column scouts were present. We have been told that the military was waiting for them and ambushed them on their way back,” a source close to the resistance group told Myanmar Now.

Five of the people who were in the vehicle managed to escape unharmed when the shooting began, he explained. However, the three individuals who died of gunshot wounds were found inside their vehicle by members of the group who went to search for them on Wednesday morning.

Two others were also found wounded but alive that morning.

The whereabouts and condition of the two remaining members was not known at the time of reporting.

The Cobra Column is made up of members of both the KNLA—the armed wing of the Karen National Union—and the People’s Defence Force, which is loyal to the National Unity Government formed by elected lawmakers and anti-junta activists in the wake of the February 2021 coup.
