Two major ethnic armed groups active in northern Shan State held talks earlier this week to discuss territorial control issues in Lashio and Hsipaw townships, according to one of the groups.
The meeting between the Shan State Progress Party/Shan State Army (SSPP/SSA) and the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) took place on Tuesday in Thanlwin, a village in Lashio Township, the MNDAA said in a statement.
“The MNDAA has no desire to have conflicts with other ethnic groups, and has no intention to oppress [other] armed groups,” the statement from the ethnic Kokang armed group said.
According to the MNDAA, the two sides agreed to enhance mutual communication for conflict resolution, establish a high-level communication and coordination mechanism, and appoint liaison officers.
The SSPP/SSA has not yet issued any news release regarding the discussions.
The MNDAA delegation was led by the group’s deputy chief. . .
