Resistance forces kill seven junta personnel in attack in Sagaing’s Kani

Joint resistance forces launched a surprise attack on junta troops and police in Kani Township, Sagaing Region, on Wednesday, according to local sources. The attack killed a total of seven junta troops and military police and led to the seizure of two rifles and ammunition, according to resistance sources. Around 20 military personnel patrolling Ward 3 in southern Kani were ambushed around 12:30pm, a Kyauk Lone Gyi-PDF (KLG-PDF) official told Myanmar Now. "We monitored their patrol movements and attacked decisively,” the KLG-PDF said. “The mission lasted only about 20 minutes.” Resistance fighters seized a junta-made MA-1 rifle, an MA-11 rifle, and ammunition, another KLG-PDF officer said. Sagaing Region has been a major stronghold of Myanmar’s armed resistance since the 2021 coup, with near-daily clashes between junta forces and local PDFs. The military has responded with airstrikes, raids, and arson campaigns, displacing hundreds of thousands. "After the mission, they retaliated wildly with 60mm mortars yesterday,” the source said. “At night, they also conducted drone surveillance. However, the heavy weapons fire caused no hits or damage.” A resistance source said around 150 junta soldiers, police, and militia are stationed in Kani Town, with security posts in three wards and frequent perimeter patrols. A separate junta column re-entered on September 3, setting up positions in Chaungma village along the Monywa–Yargyi–Kalaywa road. From September 9 to 10, the junta carried out raids, looting, and shelling in Kani and Yinmabin—killing four civilians, including two children, and injuring at least 17. But resistance forces struck the Chaungma base on September 11, forcing the troops to retreat to Kani Town. The 11-day Battle of Kani in March 2024 saw resistance forces briefly seize the town after overrunning junta garrisons. At least 47 junta troops were killed, and weapons were captured, before airstrikes and reinforcements forced a retreat. Eleven resistance fighters were killed and over 30 wounded.
