Resistance attacks force Myanmar junta troops to abandon base near Khin-U

Regime forces stationed near the Sagaing Region town of Khin-U were compelled to abandon their base on Wednesday, according to resistance sources.The base, located in the village of Ma Daung Hla, about seven miles north of Khin-U, was attacked twice last month, leading to devastating air raids on the village.“It became uninhabitable. Fire destroyed most of the houses, leaving only a hilltop pagoda, the monastery, and the rice mill intact,” a member of a local resistance group reported, describing the aftermath of the airstrikes.Despite being heavily fortified with bunkers and trenches, the destruction of the village left the base exposed. “With the houses gone, there was nothing left to provide cover. It was defenceless, both on the ground and from the air,” he added.On Wednesday, just over two weeks after the last attack, around 200 junta troops and pro-regime militia members, along with some residents of Ma Daung Hla, left the village, heading north toward Kanbalu Township.Local resistance groups reported clashes with the retreating junta troops twice during their withdrawal, though no casualties were reported.However, an officer with a local defence team stated that two members of his group sustained severe injuries from landmines while clearing the base. He noted that the presence of numerous landmines indicated that the junta troops had likely abandoned the base for good.While Ma Daung Hla is no longer habitable, residents of other nearby villages are now safe to return to their homes, according to local resistance forces. Unfortunately, many are likely to find their houses destroyed by fire, as junta troops conducted arson attacks on at least 10 villages following resistance strikes in August.
