Regime fighter jets strafe school for displaced children, killing woman, monk

Two junta fighter jets launched at least six airstrikes on a camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Sagaing Region’s Shwebo Township on Monday, killing two civilians and injuring several others, according to local sources. The attacks began at around 11am, when the jets strafed an IDP camp and school near Sin Inn, a village about 23 miles northwest of the town of Shwebo. “The school, which stood next to the IDP camp and served displaced children, was attacked along with the camp. As of now, two people have been killed and three injured,” a camp officer told Myanmar Now late Monday. Both fatalities—a monk who was killed instantly and a woman who later died of her injuries—were at the camp’s community-run school, he added. “A monk was struck in the chest and died on the spot, and a woman died after her leg was severed. A child is missing, though it’s unclear whether they were taken or what happened,” said a local man who helped with the rescue effort. The IDP camp has been providing shelter for people forced to flee their homes in Mandalay Region’s Thabeikkyin Township following its recapture by regime forces last year. Late last week, another attack in Sin Inn destroyed a house rented by displaced residents from Thabeikkyin and left seven people injured, according to the village’s defence officer. Since the junta regained control of Madaya, Singu, and Thabeikkyin townships in Mandalay Region, tens of thousands of civilians have crossed the Ayeyarwady River into Sagaing Region. Since last year, the regime’s army has carried out multiple airstrikes on displaced civilians from Mandalay Region, resulting in heavy casualties. The junta has continued its relentless air campaigns in many parts of the country, including Sagaing, Bago, and Magway regions and Rakhine and Kachin states, despite fuel shortages resulting from the US-Israeli war on Iran. At least 300 people were reported killed in these attacks in March. In some cases, the military has deployed as many as five fighters jets to carry out assaults on certain targets, as it seeks to regain control over areas previously captured by resistance forces. Earlier this month, the Arakan Army warned civilians in Rakhine State to stay alert to airstrikes after multiple warplanes were deployed in a single mission. Records from the National Unity Government’s Ministry of Human Rights show that between February 2021 and January 2026, the military carried out 2,293 airstrikes nationwide, including indiscriminate attacks on civilian infrastructure, with Sagaing Region experiencing the greatest losses, according to a report published on March 31.
