Myanmar junta battalion commander reported missing as fighting intensifies near Bhamo

Anti-regime forces led by the Kachin Independence Army continue their attacks on junta positions near the city, despite ongoing airstrikes

The commander of an infantry battalion based in southern Kachin State has reportedly gone missing, as anti-regime forces continue to intensify their offensive near the junta-controlled city of Bhamo.

The area, which borders China, has seen heavy fighting since the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and allied groups began mounting coordinated attacks on junta bases there earlier this month.

According to Col Naw Bu, spokesperson for the KIA, the missing commander is from Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 319, based in Mansi Township, south of Bhamo.

“The LIB 319 commander is no longer at the base. That much we know for sure. But whether he’s dead or alive, that I don’t know,” he said, speaking to Myanmar Now on Thursday.

Meanwhile, other sources have reported fighting. . .
