Myanmar junta attacks on Yesagyo Township villages kill three

Three were killed and seven injured amid airstrikes, shelling, and paramotor attacks by the Myanmar military on Friday in Magway Region’s Yesagyo Township, local sources said. A teenage girl was among the civilians killed, the same sources said, amid the attacks in Taung U village, some 14 miles northwest of the military-controlled town of Yesagyo and 20 miles northwest of the confluence of the Ayeyarwady and Chindwin rivers. “A 40-year-old man was killed when a junta warplane dropped two bombs on the west side of the village, an area mostly surrounded by toddy palms and farmland, at around 8am,” said a member of the Yesagyo Township People’s Defence Team, part of the armed anti-junta resistance. Soon after the aerial assault, locals said shelling from a junta base on the outskirts of Yesagyo killed an elderly woman and a girl—identified as a seventh-grade student—in the same village. “Daw Khin Than, who was 73, was killed when the third shell landed near a spot where villagers were sheltering,” a resistance-affiliated Taung U village administrator said. “The last round of artillery fire killed a 13-year-old girl and wounded her sister in the leg as they tried to take cover in a toddy palm grove.” No clashes were reported in Taung U or elsewhere in the township at the time of the airstrikes and shelling, according to the Yesagyo Township defence team. The village is within territory controlled by the resistance and has repeatedly been a target of bombing and shelling by junta forces in recent months, locals said, but Friday’s attack was the first to have caused civilian casualties. “This was the third time the village was hit by junta airstrikes, as it’s near the site of a defunct resistance base that’s no longer in operation,” a villager said. The threat of artillery and bombing by the junta has forced the clinic and school in Taung U to close in recent months, local sources said. However, an attack by two paramotors later that day injured six women in Kyet Su Kyin village some five miles east of Taung U. “The people who were injured are now in stable condition,” the township defence team representative said. Bombs dropped from the paramotors hit near the centre of the village, damaging one house and causing another to burn down, according to resistance sources. Attacks by the military have displaced some 3,000 people from villages west of the Chindwin River in Yesagyo Township, including Taung U, Ni Pa Say Taw, and Kyet Su Kyin.
