Junta pushes into Singu after seizing Madaya in northern Mandalay

After overrunning Madaya Township, junta forces are advancing into neighboring Singu, one of the last resistance-held areas in the district, according to local residents and fighters.Madaya Township, 20 miles north of Mandalay, had been under resistance control for more than a year before the junta retook it in November. Troops then pushed into neighboring Singu Township via Patlelinn village, beginning in late November. On December 6, the military seized the village of Tayawpin on the Mandalay–Mogok highway, about 12 miles from Singu Town, a Singu-based resistance source told Myanmar Now, citing concern that they would soon take the area completely.Sources say that junta forces are advancing into Singu Township with two columns of hundreds of troops—one departing from Patlelinn village on the Mandalay-Mogok road, and another from Sakyin village and Mwayponkan village on the western Ayeyarwady riverbank of Madaya.But Myanmar military troops are facing resistance from local units under the Singu Township People’s Defense Organization (PDO), the People’s Security Organization (PSO), Battalion 1222 and the Myingyan Battalion of the NUG’s armed forces, as well as fighters from the Mandalay PDF.Madaya Township has been under mixed resistance control for more than a year as anti-junta forces expanded their presence across Mandalay Region. Fighting intensified in October and November, culminating in a sustained junta offensive that dislodged local PDFs from most villages and key roadways. That same evening, junta forces took control of Patlelinn village between Madaya Town and Singu Township, and resistance forces lost control of nearly the entire Madaya Township.Junta forces have carried out repeated airstrikes on Singu since early December, forcing more than half of the town’s residents to flee, a local woman said. "We constantly hear the sound of heavy weapons, and they launch airstrikes every day,” the resident told Myanmar Now. “Just now they struck again, the ground is shaking.”The fighting has displaced tens of thousands of people from Singu, Madaya and Thabeikkyin, many of whom have fled to rural villages, forests, and hills. In northern Mandalay Region, resistance troops captured the towns of Takaung, Mogok, Singu, Thabeikkyin, and Madaya during their offensives in 2024. But the junta has since reclaimed much of this territory over the last year. The TNLA handed Mogok back to the junta in late November 2025, and by late July the military had already reclaimed the nearby town of Thabeikkyin, underscoring the regime’s steady push to reassert control across northern Mandalay.
