Junta attacks kill at least eight civilians in Mandalay and Magway regions

A series of aerial assaults carried out by Myanmar’s military killed at least eight civilians, including four children, in Mandalay and Magway regions over the weekend, various sources reported. The first attack took place at around 10:45am on Saturday, when junta forces used drones to drop three bombs on a monastery in Myetshu, a village in Mandalay Region’s Natogyi Township, the National Unity Government’s Ministry of Human Rights said in a statement. Six people sheltering at the monastery—two women, two girls, and two boys—died in that assault and six others were injured, according to the statement. The regime soldiers responsible for the attack were stationed in the village. Over a thousand people living in three neighbouring village fled the area after the incident, the statement added. Two men also died on Saturday in Magway Region’s Pauk Township, following an airstrike on a clinic in the resistance-held village of Sa Hpe, located about five miles east of the township’s junta-controlled administrative centre. “One man died on the spot and the other died later at the hospital,” a resident of the area told Myanmar Now on Sunday. “Seven people, including a nurse and two of her family members, also sustained injuries.” One of the deceased was a displaced man who was receiving treatment at the clinic when it was attacked at around 4pm, the source added. The man was one of at least 70 people from the neighbouring village of Yae Pyar sheltering in San Hpe. Last week, clashes erupted near Pyin Chaung, a village some seven miles southeast of Sa Hpe, as resistance forces intercepted a junta convoy heading toward Pauk from neighbouring Pakokku Township. More than 10,000 people from both townships have been displaced for nearly two months as the convoy has attempted to make its way along the 45-mile Pauk-Pakokku highway.
