Junta airstrikes kill elderly woman and other civilians in Pale Township

An elderly woman was killed and three others were injured when a junta warplane bombed civilian areas in Pale Township on Thursday evening, according to a local humanitarian team aligned with the National Unity Government (NUG).Sources say the Myanmar military launched multiple airstrikes in response to ongoing resistance attacks on remaining junta outposts in Pale Township, Sagaing Region.“An elderly woman from Hnget Pyaw Taw village was killed and three more injured in Kyay Tha Hmyar Village at around 5:20 pm yesterday,” a NUG’s administrator said. The junta is deploying warplanes to defend its last two bases in Pale Township after anti-regime forces captured a key outpost in Kant Daunt village on Thursday, local resistance sources said. The assault was led by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), which is now coordinating with the All Burma Students’ Democratic Front (ABSDF), the Burma Liberation Democratic Front (BLDF), and local People’s Defense Force (PDF) units from Yinmarbin district to attack three of the junta’s four remaining positions in the area. Last week, a junta fighter jet crashed near the area on June 10, killing at least four civilians. Intense fighting broke out in early June. Today, two remaining military bases remain near Kant Daunt, but both are under siege by anti-junta forces. Junta reinforcements deployed by air to the village of Inn Ma Htee, a fortified stronghold controlled by pro-junta militias, had been intercepted by the local resistance forces. “Both sides are in standby positions,” a resistance fighter told Myanmar Now. “We will launch attacks as soon as they make a move.” Military warplanes dropped bombs on local villages as fighting intensified in Zee Phyu Kone, a village held by pro-junta militias, local sources told Myanmar Now. Pa Htoe Thar village, roughly nine miles north of Zee Phyu Kone was also targeted by junta warplanes on Friday morning. “Two bombs struck the farmland between Ywar Thit and Pa Htoe Thar villages this morning,” a local source said. “One man sustained minor injuries. The explosion tore through the ground, leaving a crater deeper than a man’s height.” At least five people were killed and more than a dozen were injured by junta aerial assaults in the first week of fighting in the township. Two schools and several houses were also damaged in the ongoing clashes. At least 10,000 people have been displaced by recent fighting. Many of them are sheltering in makeshift settlements scattered across farmlands while others are taking refuge in monasteries some 10 miles away from the clashes.
