Karen people vote inside territory controlled by KNU’s armed wing
Karen people cast their ballots in Kamai Kon village, Kawkareik township, Karen state. The area is under the control of the Karen National Union’s armed wing, the Karen National Liberation Army. There are over 1.2m eligible voters in Karen state, where 211 candidates and 16 political parties are vying for seats. The National League for Democracy, the Union Solidarity and Development Party, and the Union Betterment Party are all competing for 36 seats in the state, while the Karen National Democratic Party (KNDP) is contesting 22 seats.
