After hospital strike, Myanmar military continues bombing in Sagaing, Magway regions

Resistance forces claimed nine people were killed and more than a dozen injured as the Myanmar junta conducted a series of airstrikes in Sagaing and Magway regions after killing dozens in an attack on a Rakhine State hospital last Wednesday. Two women, a teenage girl, and two men died in Sagaing Region’s Wetlet Township on Saturday when a pair of junta warplanes attacked an area where displaced people were taking shelter, according to resistance fighters based in the township. “Three died on the spot and two others died later at the hospital,” a resistance member based in Wetlet Township said. The airstrike, which occurred around 9:30pm, targeted a hill where the displaced people were staying near the village of Htone Bo, some five miles southwest of the junta-controlled town of Wetlet. In addition to the fatalities, the bombing reportedly left some 15 people in critical condition and caused eight houses to burn down. Two days earlier, junta aircraft had bombed two other locations in Sagaing Region’s Kawlin Township, according to local resistance sources. “A 25-year-old mother was killed and her two children, a six-year-old daughter and three-month-old son, were injured in Kan Pauk Tar village,” a resistance fighter from Kawlin Township said. The village lies on a major road connecting the town of Shwebo, Sagaing Region to Myitkyina, the largest city in Kachin State. Hours later, junta warplanes also bombed Tan Su village on the eastern edge of Kawlin at around 11:00pm, according to the local information-sharing group Kawlin Info, which said there were no casualties. Similarly, junta airstrikes that occurred in Sagaing Region’s Kanbalu and Depayin townships resulted in property damage but no deaths or injuries, according to locals. “We had to run for our safety last night after hearing the sound of a blast,” said a representative of the local information network Kyunhla Advocacy Group. “The attack targeted a village, but the villagers are too afraid to report the incident.” Paramotors and gyrocopters, which enable low-flying bombing runs, have increasingly become key tools for the Myanmar junta in aerial warfare (Photo: Supplied) At least three people were killed in junta paramotor assaults on Friday and Sunday in Magway Region’s Yesagyo Township, according to the township’s defence team. According to a member of the team, two men in their 50s were killed on Friday and a resistance fighter was injured in the village of Hin Thar some ten miles south of Yesagyo, while another attack two days later killed a woman in Tha Man Ta Poet village around two miles south of the town. “A woman in her 50s succumbed to her injuries after being struck by shrapnel when six bombs were dropped on the southern edge of the village,” a resistance member said. Local resistance sources said there had been no recent fighting in those villages or other areas of Yesagyo Township ahead of the paramotor attacks.
