Verdict due end of March for ex-minister’s son caught with weapons and drugs

A court will decide the fate later this month of the son of a former sports minister who was arrested at Nay Pyi Taw airport with weapons and drugs.

Phyo Ko Ko Tint San, son of Tint San, was stopped with two others in October 2017 while in possession of two pistols, 72 bullets, 1.5 grams of meth and 12 yaba tablets, according to a police statement.

He will receive his verdict on March 30 if no new information comes to light, the court said on Tuesday. He faces an unlimited prison sentence.

Police later raided the ACE Hotel, which belongs to Phyo Ko Ko Tint San’s company, and confiscated another 30 firearms along with more bullets and drugs.

Raids on his homes in Yangon and Nay Pyi Taw also turned up communications devices and gadgets used by security forces.

He is among 11 others on trial in relation to the seizures at the Dekkhina Thiri district court.

Prosecutors opened 14 separate cases against him under ten articles, including anti-drug laws, anti-gun laws and import-export laws, as well as the Official Secrets Act.

Among the 14 charges, section 19a of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law carries the highest penalty. It ranges from a minimum of 15 years to an unlimited prison sentence.

The trial has lasted for over two years, with 409 people giving testimony.

District court information officer Phyu Win Latt told Myanmar Now the court did not prolong the case intentionally.

Phyo Ko Ko Tint San’s lawyer, Myint Aung, told media after Tuesday’s hearing that he feels hopeful about the verdict because his client was not carrying the drugs when they were confiscated.
