Myanmar military loses control of five positions southwest of Mandalay

The capture of five outposts, including one used to guard a Chinese-owned pipeline, comes as anti-regime forces expand their operations in Mandalay Region

Anti-junta forces captured at least five army positions in Mandalay Region’s Taungtha Township on Monday as part of a new offensive launched over the weekend, according to resistance sources.

In a series of coordinated pre-dawn attacks, the People’s Defence Force (PDF) seized a guard post for a Chinese-owned oil and gas pipeline, a police station, a village controlled by the pro-military Pyu Saw Htee militia, a checkpoint on the Taungtha-Natogyi road, and an outpost at a textile factory, the sources said.

According to the commanding officer of the PDF’s Myingyan Battalion 3, which took part in the attacks, precautions were taken to avoid damage to the pipeline.

“This is a civil war and is not related to any foreign country. We targeted the guards inside a small building about 150 feet away [from the pipeline],” he said.
