KIA attacks regime’s armed forces in Hpakant

The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) confirmed that they clashed with the Myanmar military near Sezin village in Kachin State’s Hpakant Township on Tuesday.

KIA spokesperson Col Naw Bu said that further information about the battle had not yet been relayed to him, but added that there had also been recent clashes between the KIA and the regime in Kutkai, northern Shan State.

“We received news that there was a clash at Battalion 26, in Sezin village,” the colonel said on Tuesday.

Sezin is home to a military base which, on March 11, was the site of the KIA’s first attack against the junta after the February 1 coup.

Col Naw Bu added that the military had also fired artillery shells toward the KIA’s Hpakant-based Battalion 6 under its ninth brigade, but that fighting had not occurred with that battalion.

Multiple Kachin State-based media outlets reported that the KIA attacked a military vehicle convoy in the Hpakant area over a period of two days.

Kachin Waves reported that the regime suffered casualties after the KIA attacked a group of vehicles traveling to Hpakant from Intaw on Tuesday.

One day earlier, four military trucks were ambushed by Kachin troops and one was reportedly set on fire, according to Kachin Waves.

The clash was reported by 74 Media on Monday, stating that a military truck was burned in the fighting, which took place between the villages of Tarmakant Myothit and Sezin, and that there were multiple casualties.

The KIA’s Col Naw Bu said that no information had been confirmed regarding deaths from the regime’s armed forces.

Since the February 1 military coup, the KIA has ambushed a number of military camps, police stations and units in their territory.

Locals say there have been clashes in Kutkai in northern Shan State, as well as Hpakant, Machanbaw, and Momauk Townships in Kachin State over the last week.

The military council has not issued a statement on the clashes with the KIA.
