Junta airstrikes target resistance-held Mandalay Townships

Myanmar’s military junta launched airstrikes on three townships in Mandalay Region, including the resistance-held areas of Mogok and Singu this week, killing three civilians and injuring many others, local sources said. A junta fighter jet bombed a school in Ywartanshey village, along the Ayeyarwady River in western Madaya Township, on May 3 at 3:30 pm, killing a 25-year-old woman and wounding four others, including three women and a man, local sources told Myanmar Now. "They are internally displaced people (IDPs). The woman who died and the injured man are father and daughter,” a local resident said. “While sheltering from the war, they were sitting in the school for better ventilation in the hot weather when they were bombed.” The source, who requested anonymity, added that there had been no recent ground fighting in the western part of Madaya Township when the airstrike took place. Later that night, junta warplanes struck Letpanhla village and several wards in neighboring Singu Township—Pyi Soe Aung, Nyein Chan Aung, and Htonegyi—marking at least the fifth round of airstrikes on the area. A 30-year-old man was killed, five others were injured, and five homes were destroyed in the strikes, according to another source from Singu. "Htonegyi village is a ferry point. Many people live there,” she said. “A person from the village died too. As for Letpanhla, people have fled, so no one lives there anymore." The junta bombed the village of Letpanhla in Singu Township—under the control of the National Unity Government (NUG)—three times in March, killing 35 people, including children, and forcing many residents to flee, locals said. The Mandalay Region People’s Defense Force (MDY-PDF) and allied resistance groups launched an offensive on June 25 to seize all junta camps in the Singu area, about 54 miles north of Mandalay city, and fully captured the territory by July 17. Junta airstrikes on May 3 hit Kathea ward in western Mogok and nearby Sinkhwar village, killing one civilian, injuring another, and damaging multiple buildings, including 16 homes, two monasteries, and a Buddhist hall, according to the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), a powerful ethnic armed group based in Shan State. The town of Mogok was also bombed for three consecutive days starting from May 2, killing a man and injuring dozens of people, according to locals and resistance groups, sources say. The junta has repeatedly carried out deadly airstrikes on homes, schools, and villages in resistance-held areas of Singu, Thabeikkyin, Madaya, and Mogok in recent months, according to the Pyin Oo Lwin District People’s Defense Organization (PDO).On April 18, junta airstrikes killed over a dozen people, including children, from Singu Township and Thabeikkyin Township, and injured about 20 locals. "Now, the village is quiet and desolate,” the source from Singu said. “Everyone has fled. There's nothing left. And yet they still come and bomb with great vengeance.”
