At least four killed by Myanmar junta paramotor, artillery attacks in Sagaing’s Myaung Township

Junta attacks killed at least four civilians and injured three others following a skirmish between regime and resistance forces in Sagaing Region’s Myaung Township earlier this week, according to local sources.On Wednesday, two paramotors dropped bombs on a boarding school in Taung Ward in the town of Myaung at around 7:30pm, instantly killing two people, including an elderly woman, a man living in the area told Myanmar Now.“An 80-year-old woman and her son died on the spot while her daughter lost a leg,” the man said.At least eight houses were also damaged by a separate paramotor attack on the same day, local sources claimed.A short skirmish broke out in the town after anti-junta fighters ambushed a regime scout unit on Wednesday, according to local resistance forces.In response to the attack, the military sent a large number of reinforcements from neighbouring Myinmu Township and carried out multiple artillery bombardments on nearby villages over the next two days.“The military has deployed at least 300 reinforcement troops and they are taking up positions in four locations near and inside the town,” a resistance fighter from Myaung Township said. According to a local social welfare volunteer, junta shelling killed at least two people in two villages located near Myaung.“A father of two children in the village of Hlay Tin Oo died on the way to hospital on Wednesday, and another person was killed and two others injured in Kyi Kone,” the volunteer said.Further details about the victims were unavailable at the time of reporting.At least 10,000 people from five villages and several urban wards in Myaung Township have fled since a column of junta troops entered the town, according to township-based volunteers.“Civilians are fleeing both day and night, so we are facing difficulties in accessing food and medicines. Many people are being forced to flee during the harvest season, so they are unable to harvest their crops,” a volunteer from Myaung Township said.Local sources close to the resistance claimed that junta troops have also detained about 80 people in urban areas since Wednesday.“Some were released yesterday. We heard that the remaining detainees will be released once the troops leave,” a woman from Myaung Township said. Myanmar Now was unable to independently verify these claims due to the collapse of communication in the area.Last week, at least six people were killed during a junta raid in Pan Nyo Village, approximately 15 miles south of the town of Myaung, local sources said.
