Airstrikes kill 16 in Mandalay and Sagaing regions at end of September

Aerial attacks by the military in Mandalay and Sagaing regions resulted in 16 fatalities and at least 20 other casualties in the last week of September, according to locals and resistance sources. Junta paramotor strikes killed a 65-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man on Monday in the village of Nyaung Pin Thar in Mandalay Region’s Myingyan Township, according to the civil society organisation Myingyan Community Action Committee. Bombing by junta aircraft also killed four women and injured seven people in the villages of Kan Taung and Mar Le in Singu Township, Mandalay Region on Sunday, a local resident told Myanmar Now. He also said that higher casualty numbers were avoided only by chance. “Luckily, the schools and housing for displaced people were mostly empty at the time they were hit,” he said, adding. “Military columns come through every day, clashes occur every day, and now even the town of Singu is under threat. 10 more civilians including one pregnant woman were killed in an airstrike on Sagaing Region’s Taze Township on September 26, according to local sources, and 11 people were injured. Residents reported that a fighter jet dropped two bombs near a fuelling station in Kanhtuma village, Taze Township, setting a house and two shops ablaze and destroying four cars, a three-wheeler, and five motorcycles. As part of a broader, countrywide counteroffensive, the military's ground forces are now menacing the positions of the Mandalay Region People’s Defence Forces (MDY-PDF)— armed resistance units commanded by the publicly mandated National Unity Government—in Madaya and Singu townships north of Mandalay. Resistance forces have held control since seizing all junta outposts in Singu Township in July after less than a month of fighting. The junta has since attacked the resistance in the town using every means at its disposal, including warships on the Ayeyarwady River and airstrikes.
